Wheeling Around In Hawaii

Kauai vacation“Huaka’ino?” Or as the Hawaiians say, “Did you have a nice trip?” Well, that depends. Are you going to hire a car and make a real road trip of your trip? While the Hawaiian Islands are gorgeous, attractions are also spread out, and visitors must travel through some rural and even remote areas to get to them. To do your Hawaiian vacation justice, one must really hire a car, and you’re in luck. All of the major rental car companies have locations on the islands, so you’ll have a variety of choices for your vehicle. And once you’ve acquired your temporary set of wheels, where should you go?

Hawaii
While on the Big Island, after you’ve seen Honolulu, and played in the surf at Diamondhead Beach, venture further out to Kono, Hilo, and uphill to Volcano for some stunning natural beauty. The main roads on this island are all paved, making for perfect driving for the cautious traveller.

Maui
What’s probably Hawaii’s second best known island also hosts its most famous road trip; the road to Hana. Not everyone makes it to the actual town of Hana (pop. 1200+), because the area has so many distracting attractions along the way, like the Seven Sacred Pools, and the Pipiwai Trail, where some stunning native plants bloom. The road to Hana also features a number of waterfalls along the way. And don’t forget to stop at one of the road’s many stands for delicious local fruit and banana bread. And while on Maui, one should see Haleakala. The highest point on the island, it also offers some of Maui’s most spectacular views.

Kauai
This little island gem features the chain’s “Hawaiian Grand Canyon”, Waimea Canyon. This natural wonder includes striking red rock and deep valleys, and is great for not only scenic driving, but offers lots of hiking opportunity as well. When traveling in Kauai try staying at one of the many Kauai vacation rentals so you can enjoy everything the great island has to offer. When traveling in Kauai try staying at one of the many Kauai vacation rentals so you can enjoy everything the great island has to offer.
